The Wonsan Kalma resort in North Korea, aimed at becoming one of the largest single-entity-owned beach resorts worldwide, embodies Kim Jong Un's tourism ambitions. With reports estimating 7,000 to 20,000 rooms, the project highlights a blend of luxury and state power. Although the resort has faced multiple delays since its 2014 announcement, primarily due to sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is set to open in June. Tour operators, like Young Pioneer Tours, are optimistic about its potential, pointing to impressive facilities catering to both tourists and official delegations.
"This is by far larger than anything else Kim has done in tourism," Bruce W. Bennett stated, highlighting the scale and ambition of the Wonsan Kalma project.
"There's a lot of really cool facilities there, not just built for tourists," said Rowan Beard, pointing out the unique blend of tourism and delegation accommodations.
"The dream for Kim: a world-class megatourism project displaying his totalitarian power to the world and at home, and a way to make money."
Analysts speculate that the project delays could be due to import restraints caused by international sanctions, affecting construction progress.
