Kennedy Center president departs months before the art complex's scheduled closing

Richard Grenell, former U.S. ambassador to Germany and Trump loyalist, is departing his role as Kennedy Center president ahead of the facility's scheduled closure for renovations in July. President Trump, who became Kennedy Center chairman in February 2025, announced the leadership change on Truth Social and promoted Matt Floca from vice president of operations to chief operating officer and executive director. Grenell's tenure has been marked by significant institutional turmoil, including canceled performances by prominent artists, the Washington National Opera's departure, staff departures, and declining ticket sales. Grenell, lacking prior arts administration experience, advocated for revenue-generating productions, a position misaligned with traditional performing arts funding models that rely on earned revenue, philanthropy, and subsidies.
