Patrol officers immediately responded and began to search the area. The Lowell Police Department Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) was deployed as well as the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing. Numerous Police K9s, Massachusetts State Police Troopers, the NEMLEC Swat Team, UMass Lowell Police, LNHP Law Enforcement Rangers, the FBI, and ATF also responded to assist."

On September 3, 2025, just before 2:30 PM, Lowell Police received a report of an individual possibly armed on the UMass Lowell campus. Patrol officers, the department drone, Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, police K9s, State Troopers, NEMLEC SWAT, UMass Lowell Police, LNHP Rangers, the FBI, and the ATF responded and secured the area. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau opened a comprehensive investigation while patrol maintained scene security overnight. A juvenile male was later identified and the weapon was recovered and confirmed to be an airsoft replica. The department affirmed continued use of all resources to ensure public safety.
