"They don't deserve that because I think they were misled [by police]. I mean, somebody did it. But they didn't have what it took to prove that it was Rashaun. ... They presented us with a motive that was flaccid ... there wasn't enough there."
"We just think the state hadn't proved their case. A lot of speculation, a lot of things that pointed to him [Jones] ... In order for us to get there, we had to [have sufficient evidence]."
A mistrial was declared in the case against ex-Miami Hurricanes player Rashaun Jones, accused of killing teammate Bryan Pata. Five of the six jurors wanted to acquit Jones, while only one wanted to convict, preventing the unanimous verdict required in Florida. Jurors cited lack of direct evidence and inconsistent testimony from the lead Miami-Dade police detective as reasons for their decision. Prosecutors indicated they intend to retry the case within the 90-day window allowed by Florida law. Jones' attorney plans to request a bond reduction from the current $850,000, with a GoFundMe page created to help raise funds. Jurors and an alternate juror who spoke with ESPN stated police failed to prove their case beyond speculation.
