Judge signs off on Disney's $233 million wage theft settlement for theme park employees
"A wage theft lawsuit for $233 million filed by more than 51,000 Disneyland employees was approved Tuesday, Sept. 16 by an Orange County judge, ending a six-year dispute over pay for the Anaheim theme park's employees. On Tuesday, Judge William Claster of the Orange County Superior Court granted final approval in the class-action lawsuit against Disneyland for failure to pay its employees in accordance with the Anaheim living wage ordinance."
"A final report on the actual amounts paid to class members must be submitted by June 30, 2026, by their lawyers, which includes McCracken, Stemerman & Holsberry in Oakland, and Hadsell, Stormer Renick & Dai in Pasadena. McCracken said the average payment for current and former employees in the class action is estimated at $3,000 each. Have you ever heard of a class action settlement like that? he asked. It's usually a coupon to buy an ice cream, he said."
An Orange County judge granted final approval to a $233 million class-action wage-theft settlement for more than 51,000 Disneyland employees, ending a six-year dispute. The lawsuit alleged failure to pay employees in accordance with Anaheim's Measure L living wage ordinance tied to city tax-subsidized businesses in the resort district. Employees filed suit in 2019; a 2021 ruling favored Disney but an appellate panel reversed that decision in July 2023. Disney said it had begun raising wages for cast members. Lawyers must submit a final report by June 30, 2026; average payments are estimated at about $3,000 each.
