John Beam, a longtime Laney College coach and influential Oakland mentor, was fatally shot on the Laney College campus. His passing has deeply affected former players, colleagues, and community members across the Bay Area. Damian Lillard remembered Beam for giving him a first job at Laney football games and credited Beam with shaping hundreds of young men. Greg Whiteley described Beam as a mentor, steadying force, and lifeline who inspired belief in players. The Las Vegas Raiders and individual athletes praised Beam's decades of service and mentorship and mourned the loss to Oakland sports.
