"The story carried itself to this point. There's so many twists and turns, lies and falsehoods,"
"Annie makes a really interesting point that, at the beginning, this wasn't really covered. Because you hear about it, and then it's a suicide, and it goes away,"
"News coverage and journalism were such a huge part of this story. The Greenbergs were not getting any movement or answers from all these institutions, the police, the medical examiners."
"By launching this docuseries, the world could see the steps, the heartbreak, but give you concrete evidence."
A 27-year-old Philadelphia school teacher, Ellen Greenberg, was found dead in her Manayunk apartment in 2011 with more than 20 stab wounds. Authorities initially ruled the death a homicide and later changed the ruling to suicide, a determination the parents have long contested. A three-part Hulu docuseries features interviews with family and friends, crime scene photos and autopsy analysis and emphasizes the role of news coverage. A former medical examiner has since said the death should be designated as something other than suicide. The City of Philadelphia agreed to an expeditious review under a settlement, and the case is back in court.
