Historically Black colleges team up to pursue top research status
""We are so thrilled and happy," said David K. Wilson, the president of Morgan State University. "It's the first time in the history of American higher education that a group of HBCUs has elevated themselves to the elite ranks of research institutions.""
"Recent major gifts - such as $600 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies to four historically Black medical schools, and a total of more than $1 billion from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott to individual schools - are helping to propel rapid change."
"Ruth Simmons, the former president of Brown University and Prairie View A&M University, said the effort is important because HBCUs too often work in isolation from dominant research institutions."
Fifteen historically Black colleges and universities have united to pursue Research 1 status, aiming to challenge stereotypes and improve funding opportunities. The Association of HBCU Research Institutions (AHRI) will collaborate with leading research universities and operate from the Association of American Universities headquarters. Currently, only Howard University holds R1 status, while thirteen others have R2 status. Significant donations, including $600 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies, are facilitating this transformation. The initiative seeks to strengthen partnerships and reduce isolation from dominant research institutions.
