"As the nation continued to grapple with the unthinkable in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, two American flags rose solemnly over gates at Boston Logan International Airport - one of Logan's most enduring, yet inconspicuous, tributes to the passengers and crews lost that day. The flags are posted at the exterior of B32 and C19, the gates from which the hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 departed 24 years ago Thursday."
""Both memorials appeared spontaneously, raised by airport and airline employees without fanfare or ceremony," he said. "These two memorials are one and the same. And there is no grander memorial. That memorial is the flag of the United States of America." The Massport spokesperson noted that because airlines have moved terminals in the years since, four American flags now fly over gates at Logan. In addition to B32 and C19, flags are raised over gates B11 and B27."
Two American flags were raised at Boston Logan International Airport in the weeks after Sept. 11, 2001, over the gates from which the hijacked flights departed. The flags were hoisted by the respective airlines between a week and a month after the attacks. Airport and airline employees raised the flags spontaneously without ceremony. Because airlines moved terminals over the years, four flags now fly over gates B32, C19, B11, and B27. Airlines chose not to add markers or signage to call attention to the flags. The flags symbolize the determination of the airport, the nation, and the community to recover.
