He graduated from college at age 79. A campus tragedy inspired him to enroll
Briefly

Linwood Riddick graduated from South Carolina State University just days before turning 80, having pursued a college education after his military service in Vietnam and retirement. After hearing a discussion about the Orangeburg Massacre, where police shot SC State students in 1968, he felt compelled to enroll at the university. Riddick earned a bachelor's degree in music industry and maintained a daily commute to classes. Recognized during commencement, he emphasized the importance of keeping one's mind sharp and paying tribute to historical sacrifices.
"I heard some men talk about the Orangeburg Massacre... I'm going to have to come here, put my name on this institutional wall because of the sacrifice of these three men."
"Mr. Riddick, you inspire us all... he drove an hour every day from his home in Summerville... to attend classes."
"Your mind, your body, your soul and spirit they must be utilized."
Riddick was honored even before crossing the stage... the crowd gave Riddick a rousing ovation as he accepted his diploma.
