Hawaiians organize to buy back ancestral land from billionaire
""no trespassing""
""Returning land to Indigenous communities is this global thing that's happening all around the world, but we also know that it hasn't happened at the scale that Molokai wants it to happen ever before; it hasn't happened in Hawaii ever before,""
""So we knew that in addition to having this deep, deep-seated desire to make this aweso"
Native Hawaiians have long faced displacement from ancestral lands, and a significant portion of Molokai is owned by an overseas investment firm. Molokai Ranch, encompassing over 55,000 acres, stands abandoned with decaying resort infrastructure and fenced-off areas marked by "no trespassing" signs. The current owner acquired the property in 2005, planned luxury development, halted operations in 2008 after community opposition, and listed the land for sale in 2017 for $260 million. The Molokai Heritage Trust formed to return land to Hawaiian hands and is mobilizing the community to purchase, protect, and steward the island's ancestral lands.
