Harrods, the renowned luxury department store, has recently fallen victim to a cyberattack, highlighting the increasing concern over online security in high-end retail. The attack led to temporary shutdowns of some systems as the store sought to protect itself, although customer payment information remained secure. This incident mirrors similar cyber incidents impacting other prominent British retailers, such as Marks & Spencer and Co-op, which have recently faced significant operational disruptions due to security breaches. The connection between these attacks remains uncertain but signals a pressing issue within the retail sector.
In a statement the store said, "we recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to some of our systems. Our seasoned IT security team immediately took proactive steps to keep systems safe and as a result we have restricted internet access at our sites today."
The Qatar-owned department store said it was forced to temporarily shut down some systems after realizing it was being targeted earlier this week.
Details of the cyberattack remain unclear, but some customers have reported being unable to complete purchases.
This hacking attempt follows shortly after two other major British retailers - Marks & Spencer and Co-op - were targeted in online breaches.
