On Saturday night, a ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, leading to two fatalities, including 20-year-old Mexican Navy cadet América Yamilet Sánchez. Witnesses described the horrific scene as the ship crashed, causing significant damage. This incident took place during a practice voyage celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexico's naval independence. The ship lost power, preventing it from avoiding the bridge. More than 20 crew members sustained injuries. The Mexican Navy and local officials expressed condolences, and the incident drew parallels to a previous ship disaster in Baltimore that claimed six lives.
"I deeply regret the passing of Veracruz cadet AméÌrica Yamilet Sánchez," said RocÃo Nahle GarcÃa - the governor of Veracruz, the state where she was from. "My gratitude to the Secretariat of the Navy and my wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured. Veracruz is with you."
The accident reminded some of the tragic ship and bridge collapse near Baltimore last year, an accident that resulted in the loss of six lives after a container ship hit the Francis Scott Key bridge.
