A federal judge has ruled against the Trump administration's attempt to dismantle the United States Institute of Peace. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell found that the president exceeded his authority in firing board members and seizing the institute's assets. Howell deemed the removal of board members unlawful and underscored that the attempted takeover represented a significant abuse of power, causing unnecessary distress among USIP employees. The ruling emphasized USIP's unique status, determining it is a part of the federal government, thus restricting presidential authority over its operations.
"The transfers of the institute's assets, including its headquarters, seized in the administration's takeover are null and void," Judge Howell declared, reinforcing the illegitimacy of Trump's actions.
"Trump's attempted takeover of USIP represented a gross usurpation of power and a way of conducting government affairs that unnecessarily traumatized the committed leadership and employees of USIP," Howell emphasized.
