Fearing for her children's safety, Mississippi woman shoots and kills escaped research monkey | Fortune
"I did what any other mother would do to protect her children,"
"I shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that's when he fell."
One escaped rhesus monkey was shot and killed early Sunday by a Heidelberg, Mississippi homeowner who reported fearing for her children's safety. A 16-year-old son alerted his mother after seeing a monkey in the yard; the mother retrieved a firearm and shot the animal at approximately 60 feet. Residents had been warned about diseases carried by the escaped monkeys, prompting the shooting. The Jasper County Sheriff's Office confirmed a monkey was found and transferred the animal to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. A truck carrying 21 rhesus monkeys overturned on Interstate 59; three monkeys reportedly escaped.
