"After a lengthy two-year investigation involving Placer County Sheriff's detectives and the District Attorney's Office, Danny Serafini and Samantha Scott were arrested in Nevada for the 2021 Homewood murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood."
"The impact of this attack has extended far beyond the immediate victims, deeply affecting family members and the broader community, and highlighting the lasting harm caused by deliberate violence."
"Serafini graduated from Serra High in 1992 and was drafted shortly thereafter by the Minnesota Twins. In a career spanning 11 years, the left-hander played for the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies."
Daniel Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for five teams including the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, was convicted in July 2025 and sentenced to life in prison without parole for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and first-degree burglary. The crimes occurred during a 2021 shooting at a home near Lake Tahoe where Serafini killed his father-in-law Gary Spohr and attempted to kill his mother-in-law Wendy Wood during a burglary. Wood survived the initial shooting but died a year later. After a two-year investigation, Serafini and Samantha Scott were arrested in Nevada. During sentencing, Serafini maintained his innocence, claiming he was out partying with his wife the night of the shooting.
