Ecuador captures Fito', country's most wanted fugitive gang leader
Briefly

Jose Adolfo Macias, also known as 'Fito', has been recaptured in Ecuador after 18 months on the run. He escaped from a Guayaquil prison in January 2024 while serving a lengthy sentence for drug-related crimes. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa confirmed his extradition to the US on drug trafficking and weapons charges. Noboa's administration, which declared a 60-day state of emergency due to violence following Macias's escape, has designated Los Choneros and other gangs as terrorist groups to strengthen law enforcement efforts against them.
President Daniel Noboa stated, "More will fall, we will reclaim the country. No truce" in reference to the ongoing fight against crime following the capture of Jose Adolfo Macias.
Macias' capture was facilitated by Ecuador's laws on Solidarity and Intelligence, which President Noboa praised, asserting, "Gracias a esas leyes, Fito fue capturado hoy y esta en manos del Bloque de Seguridad."
The Ecuadorian government faced significant unrest after Macias's escape, which ignited widespread riots and violence, resulting in a declared 60-day state of emergency across the nation.
Following his recapture, Jose Adolfo Macias, alias 'Fito', will be extradited to the US on serious charges related to drug trafficking and firearms smuggling.
