DOJ charges New Jersey congresswoman with assault over immigration facility tussle
"Democrats have denounced the charges as politically motivated and an effort by the Trump administration and the Justice Department to intimidate members of Congress and chill oversight."
"Habba said she tried to address the matter with McIver and resolve it without bringing charges, but that the congresswoman declined. "It is the job of this office to uphold justice impartially, regardless of who you are.""
Rep. LaMonica McIver, a New Jersey Democrat, has been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers during a protest outside an immigration detention facility. The interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, announced the charges, which include two counts related to impeding ICE and Homeland Security agents. McIver and her allies claim the charges are politically motivated intimidation from the Trump administration. Despite efforts to resolve the situation without charges, McIver denied any wrongdoing, stating she looks forward to presenting her case in court and insists her actions were about oversight of detainee treatment.
