"I am so grateful for Chief Bellamy's service and dedication to the university,"
"He provided strong leadership and essential community engagement during a critical period in which we reimagined the role of law enforcement at Cornell. Our department, and the community, are the better for his efforts."
"A leader is not going to be effective unless the team follows their vision,"
"So I feel very fortunate and blessed to have the team here who trusted me to lead them, and I can only hope to earn that trust, collaboration and partnership with the members of the Ithaca Police Department and the community."
Anthony Bellamy will retire from the Cornell University Police Department on Oct. 1 and begin as deputy chief at the Ithaca Police Department on Oct. 2. He will take part in a ceremonial "walk-out" on Sept. 19. Deputy Chief Eric Stickel will be appointed interim chief on Sept. 20. Bellamy served more than 21 years at CUPD and was the first Black chief in CUPD history. The university reorganized law-enforcement functions in 2022 to create the Division of Public Safety and the Community Response Team. The reorganization followed recommendations from the Public Safety Advisory Committee formed after the killing of George Floyd. Bellamy began his law-enforcement career more than 30 years ago in Dutchess County and described telling fellow officers of his departure as difficult.
