Colleges Fear Decline in International Student Enrollment
Briefly

The early months of Donald Trump's second term have raised significant concerns among international students and advocates due to aggressive immigration policies. Reports of visa revocations, arrests, and funding cuts in STEM fields are deepening anxieties about U.S. education prospects for these students. An expanded travel ban targeting 43 countries is also under consideration. Experts predict a greater decline in international student applications than in 2017, as many students may seek opportunities abroad, particularly in countries like the U.K. and Canada. The recent recovery of international enrollment could be jeopardized by these new restrictions.
The number of international applicants to U.S. colleges fell by 2.2 percent for undergraduates and 5.5 percent for graduate students after Trump's first-term travel ban.
International enrollment has only recently begun to recover, surging in 2023 and inching closer to pre-pandemic levels this fall.
