John Beam raised concerns about campus security shortly before he was shot and killed. He questioned the effectiveness of 'six guards, 24 hours' coverage and complained of inadequate response, insufficient staffing, slow response times, and lack of follow-up after a field house break-in days earlier. A contract with the Alameda County sheriff's office ended in 2020. Students described a palpable sense of loss on campus.
