Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated as both the Philippines and China have staked claims on Sandy Cay, with each country raising its flag. The Philippines responded to China's earlier seizure of the area by deploying navy and coast guard ships. This incident coincides with ongoing US-Philippine military exercises aimed at countering regional Chinese aggression. Experts warn that China's military actions, while engaging in talks with ASEAN for regional stability, contradict their diplomatic efforts, potentially hindering any progress in resolving disputes over territorial claims.
"This is yet another example of contradictory approaches where [Chinese] military posturing is in direct contradiction to diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions," said Drew Thompson.
"China seems to sabotage and undermine their own professed interests in peaceful dialogue and resolution," he added.
