Carcass of Timmy the humpback whale brought to shore in Denmark
The humpback whale was first spotted off the German coast on March 3 and repeatedly stranded in the Baltic Sea for two weeks before its carcass was dragged onto a Danish beach. The whale, nicknamed “Timmy” and “Hope,” drew extensive German media coverage with push alerts and live updates on its health. It was found dead on May 14 near Anholt in the Kattegat, the strait connecting the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. A contentious rescue effort culminated May 2 when the whale was transported toward the North Sea on a barge to guide it back to the Atlantic Ocean. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency said the carcass would be examined next week to determine the cause of death, after a livestream showed it being pulled ashore by a cable. The reason it entered the Baltic Sea remains unclear, with experts suggesting it may have lost its way after encountering herring or during migration.
