The federal government’s recent mass deportations have led to the revocation of student visas for over 96 international students in California. Lawsuits have been filed by affected students, highlighting the uncertainty and challenges they face. University officials, including UC Berkeley Chancellor Richard Lyons, underscore the detrimental impact of these actions on campus communities. Critics, including immigration advocates, express concern for the well-being of students as the federal explanation for visa terminations remains unclear, exacerbating the fear and anxiety surrounding their legal status and educational continuity.
"These actions create an uncertain and challenging environment for our campus community," UC Berkeley Chancellor Richard Lyons said in a statement Monday.
Now, the visa revocations in California have put students here in a 'tailspin,' said Zahra Billoo, executive director of the Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
At least 96 student visa holders in California have been affected in recent days: six at Stanford; 32 in the California State University system and at least 58 across multiple University of California campuses.
"We gave you a visa to come and study and get a degree, not to become a social activist that tears up our university campuses," Rubio said at a March 27 news conference.
