California parents charged with murder of missing 7-month-old son
"Rebecca Haro told San Bernardino County sheriff's investigators that she was changing the baby's diaper by her vehicle on Aug. 14 outside a Big 5 store in Yucaipa when she was assaulted and knocked unconscious by an unknown man. When she awoke, the child was gone, she said. Investigators interviewed multiple people, including the Haros, but when confronted with inconsistencies in her initial account, the mother declined to continue with the interview, sheriff's officials said."
"Sheriff's investigators later said that account was a lie and the Haros were arrested on Aug. 22. During an Aug. 24 jailhouse interview with a Southern California News Group reporter, Rebecca Haro stood by her assertion that Emmanuel was kidnapped. Later that day, Jake Haro, wearing a red jail jumpsuit, accompanied investigators as they looked for Emmanuel's body in a brushy area off of the 60 Freeway near Gilman Springs Road in the Riverside County Badlands."
Jake Haro, 32, and Rebecca Haro, 41, were charged with murder and a misdemeanor false police report in connection with the disappearance of their 7-month-old son, Emmanuel. Rebecca reported Aug. 14 that she was changing the baby's diaper outside a Big 5 store in Yucaipa when an unknown man assaulted and knocked her unconscious and the child was gone when she awoke. Investigators found inconsistencies in her account, later called the story a lie, and arrested the Haros on Aug. 22. Rebecca maintained her kidnapping claim in a jailhouse interview while Jake accompanied investigators to search brushy terrain off the 60 Freeway; authorities have not said whether he led them to that location. A sign demanding justice for Emmanuel hangs outside the parents' home, and the search for the child's body continued. The case comes almost four years after Jake and a different spouse, Vanessa Haro, faced separate charges.
