"BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. - This year, Burning Man has had a rough start. On Saturday, one day before the gates opened to the public, a brutal dust storm whipped the event, with gusts reaching 50 mph. That storm, which may have been the worst in Burning Man's history, destroyed several structures, including the beloved Orgy Dome and "Black Cloud," a 50-foot-tall Ukrainian artwork."
"And on Tuesday, a longer, harder rainstorm hit the playa, filling its roads with puddles of tan water. Biking was impossible, and walking was a challenge. But knock on wood - or dust, or clay - the event seems to be finally in the clear. There was a brief, powerful rainstorm on Wednesday, but the 30 minutes of precipitation wasn't enough to soak the ground like the night before."
Severe storms struck Burning Man early, beginning with a brutal dust storm with gusts up to 50 mph that destroyed several structures, including the Orgy Dome and the 50-foot Ukrainian artwork Black Cloud. Subsequent rainstorms turned the desert surface to mud, leaving some attendees stuck in gate lines and making biking and walking difficult. A shorter rain on Wednesday did less damage and by nightfall bikes could roll again. By Thursday afternoon skies cleared and forecasts predicted sunny conditions. Roads and pathways remain scarred by hardened tire tracks and footprints, creating potholes and soreness for cyclists.
