Brooklyn Family Faces Hardship After ICE Detains Father
"Papa! Papa!"
"He started to cry,"
"We had no idea they were going to catch him right there, right outside the door of the court,"
Yonquenide, 27, was detained by masked ICE agents at 26 Federal Plaza on September 18 immediately after an asylum application hearing. The detainment separated him from his pregnant wife, Franyelis, 28, and their sons, three-year-old Emmanuel and eight-year-old Yoneifer, with a third child expected. The family now lives in a Brooklyn apartment with Yonquenide's sister while Franyelis struggles to provide for the children and cope emotionally. Emmanuel repeatedly looks to the front door expecting his father to return and holds a photo of him, unaware that his father remains in ICE custody.
