Bookings for cargo shipping spiked this week - but it may not last, a shipping CEO said
Briefly

Following a temporary tariff rollback agreement between the US and China, American importers have significantly increased their bookings for cargo shipments from China, with reports of over a 50% rise in recent days. Hapag-Lloyd's CEO, Rolf Habben Jansen, noted that this surge could be short-lived, dependent on the outcomes of ongoing trade negotiations. Container-tracking firm Vizion reported a staggering 277% increase in bookings for the week starting May 5, highlighting a marked recovery in trade flow. However, uncertainties about future tariffs loom over this rebound's durability.
We have seen over the last couple of days that bookings have indeed been up more than 50% compared to what we saw the last four weeks.
Right now, we see a surge that could be very short-lived, but it could also last for 60 or 90 days, very much dependent on what comes out of those trade talks between China and the US.
