"Talk about it now: What do you want me to do?"
"It's a ball. Messed up the whole game, you know? I mean, can't go back in time and talking about it now, won't change anything. So it was bad, and thank God for ABS next year, because this is terrible."
Xander Bogaerts struck out looking on a pitch that appeared out of the strike zone during the ninth inning of the Padres' Game 3 National League Wild Card Series loss to the Cubs in Chicago. The pitch came on a 3-2 count with San Diego trailing 3-1 after Jackson Merrill's leadoff ninth-inning home run. Manager Mike Shildt raced out of the dugout in protest. Brad Keller then hit two batters; Andrew Kittredge retired the next two hitters and the Cubs advanced. Bogaerts called the pitch a ball, said the missed call altered the game, and welcomed the automated ball-strike system coming next season.
