Beloved Italian grandfather beaten to death by psycho killer laid to rest
"I've been in shock and denial that he is gone, I have been intensely sad, and angry with the situation, and that we live in a world where something like this could even happen to a good man like him."
"While it's easy to fall into a trap of anger and blame, this morning, I challenge us all to take this time to remember how my Uncle Nicky lived, and the example his life is for all of us."
"While he and my grandmother were often the ultimate odd couple, arguing with each other in Italian in one moment and laughing the next, they were always there for me on Sundays and holidays, a constant in my life as I grew up,"
Nicola Tanzi, 64, was beaten to death Oct. 7 at the Jay Street–MetroTech subway station after holding a door open for an alleged assailant. The suspect, 25-year-old David Mazariegos, allegedly sucker-punched Tanzi, knocked him to the ground, and repeatedly kicked him; records show Mazariegos has five open criminal cases. Mazariegos has not yet entered a plea. About 200 relatives and friends attended a funeral at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Bensonhurst, where hymns were sung, mourners wept, and family members recalled Tanzi's devotion to his large Italian family. Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa attended the service.
