"Shaundra Stanio, who was in a severely weakened state during the attack due to her ongoing battle with cancer pleaded with her attacker not to harm her, the press release reads. She offered to give him her purse and all the money she had, but instead of taking the money, her attacker told her that he was sorry she had cancer and proceeded to sexually assault her."
"On July 1, 2005, a month after Smith was arrested, Stanio bravely testified from her hospital bed answering questions about her attack, the D.A. press release notes. Prior to the conditional examination, Shaundra had told her family it was extremely important for her to testify so that her words might prevent someone else from becoming a victim. Three days later on July 4th, Shaundra lost her long and courageous battle with breast cancer."
Terrence Lorran Smith is serving a 42-years-to-life sentence for crimes committed from Jan. 7 to June 1, 2005, including residential burglary, assault with intent to commit a specific sex offense, forcible rape, forcible digital penetration, and forcible oral copulation. The Solano County District Attorney's office appeared at a parole hearing and argued against Smith's release, leading to a parole denial. One victim, Shaundra Stanio, was home alone with her toddler and was severely weakened by cancer during her assault. Stanio testified from her hospital bed on July 1, 2005, and died three days later on July 4.
