Bay Area animal rights group co-founder ordered to pay $191,000 for Sonoma County farm trespassing
"The order against Wayne Hsiung was announced as another DxE organizer, Zoe Rosenberg, is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in a separate protest case. Rosenberg was arrested in November 2023 on the same day Hsiung was sentenced in Santa Rosa. Judge Laura Passaglia ruled Nov. 21 that Hsiung must pay $87,195 to Sunrise Farms and $104,509 to Weber Family Farms. Both businesses are owned by brothers Mike and Scott Weber."
"'His and his co-conspirators' efforts caused significant financial harm to the victims above and beyond the theft of a few animals,' Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a statement Tuesday. 'The restitution ordered by the judge underscores the significant financial harm caused by these illegal activities, and the real cost to Sonoma County businesses.' Judge Laura Passaglia ruled Nov. 21 that Hsiung must pay $87,195 to Sunrise Farms and $104,509 to Weber Family Farms."
A judge ordered Wayne Hsiung to pay approximately $191,000 in restitution to two Sonoma County poultry farms, with awards of $87,195 to Sunrise Farms and $104,509 to Weber Family Farms. A jury in November 2023 found Hsiung guilty of two misdemeanor trespass counts and one felony count of conspiracy to commit trespass. Prosecutors say a May 29, 2018 protest involved participants refusing to leave property, entering structures and removing chickens. Sonoma County officials described significant financial harm to the farms. Zoe Rosenberg, another Direct Action Everywhere organizer, faces separate sentencing and was arrested in November 2023. Hsiung, a licensed attorney, represented himself at trial.
