Auburn's Golesh makes 'easy call' to keep Durkin
"We are fortunate to retain one of the top defensive minds in college football here on The Plains,"
"He's an elite leader, incredible father and husband and will be phenomenal leader on the defensive side of the ball. We have great respect for each other. Time to go to work."
"Coach Golesh and I have known each other long time and I've got a lot of respect for him, his teams and the way they work,"
"I'm excited about what he's going to bring to Auburn and grateful for the chance to work alongside him. I love this group of players, and it mattered to me to keep pushing forward with what they have already started."
Alex Golesh retained DJ Durkin as Auburn's defensive coordinator. Durkin served as Auburn's defensive coordinator for two seasons and became interim head coach on Nov. 2 after Hugh Freeze's firing. Durkin's interim tenure included an upset win over Alabama that bolstered his bid for the permanent role. Auburn finished 5-7 after losing the Iron Bowl 27-20. Durkin previously held coordinator roles at Texas A&M and Ole Miss and was Maryland's head coach from 2016 to 2018. Auburn's defense ranked 31st in yards allowed and 32nd in points allowed. Golesh and Durkin have known each other for more than 20 years.
