"Fifty million people come here every single year, Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole said at Tuesday's ceremony. Fifty million people see Newark Liberty, and this is what they're going to see. A new Terminal A, a new Terminal B, New Access, a new AirTrain. This is what they need."
"The 2.5-mile automated people-mover will replace the current AirTrain system, which has served the airport since 1996. Port Authority says the current system requires significant maintenance and repair, and is unable to be expanded or upgraded to newer technology."
"The new AirTrain is a $3.5 billion investment. The new fleet will feature seven five-car trains, each holding 135-160 passengers with luggage; more than double the current capacity. Passengers will be able to walk from car to car, and each will feature aesthetic lighting, real-time signage, and seating. Tomorrow's AirTrain Newark won't just be a massive upgrade over today's AirTrain Newark, but also a huge leap forward that represents the next frontier of Newark Liberty International Airport's modernization, said Sarah McKeon, Director of Aviation for the Port Authority's airports."
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new AirTrain Newark, expected to be completed in early 2030. The 2.5-mile automated people-mover will replace the current AirTrain system that has served the airport since 1996 because the existing system requires significant maintenance and cannot be expanded or upgraded. The $3.5 billion project will deploy seven five-car trains holding 135–160 passengers each, more than doubling current capacity, with walk-through cars, aesthetic lighting, real-time signage, and seating. The system is designed to expand capacity to meet projected passenger growth and to improve connectivity among terminals including the new Terminal A.
