AI assistants are being applied beyond convenience to political strategy, with an effort to use AI to elect independents to the House in 2026. The Independent Center aims to use AI to identify districts where independents could succeed and to uncover promising, overlooked candidates. Winning a handful of seats could deny either major party a House majority and alter how the chamber operates. No new independent has won a House seat in 35 years. Identification as independent is rising: Gallup found 43% in 2024 and exit polls showed 34% independent voters in 2024, up from 26% in 2020.
