Profane chants aimed at Rory McIlroy began at the practice range and escalated through the Ryder Cup weekend. Verbal abuse and inappropriate fan behavior worsened, and a cup of beer struck the brim of Erica Stoll's hat as she walked beside McIlroy. Team Europe defeated the U.S. 15-13 despite the hostile crowd. McIlroy called the conduct unacceptable and said golf should be held to a higher standard. PGA of America chief executive Derek Sprague apologized to McIlroy and Stoll by email. Comedian Heather McMahan apologized for participating in a profane chant, and PGA president Don Rea Jr. later issued an apology to members.
