A wind project is stalled in New York. Experts worry about impacts across the U.S.
Briefly

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has ordered the suspension of the Empire Wind 1 offshore project, highlighting rising opposition to offshore wind energy under the current administration. Despite having federal permits, the decision reflects concerns over the approval process, which Burgum claims was conducted too quickly. Experts contest this, pointing out that a comprehensive environmental review took place, bolstering the argument for the project’s viability. The suspension could impact energy production for 500,000 New York homes, further complicating the future of renewable energy initiatives in the U.S.
"This really is next level offshore wind aggression," Freudenberg says.
"BOEM spent two and a half years conducting an environmental review. The final product of that environmental review is an environmental impact statement that's over 3000 pages long, with all of its appendices, and it's very thorough," Eisenson says.
"Approval for the project was rushed through by the prior administration without sufficient analysis," Burgum wrote.
