Since the 2021 abortion ban in Texas, maternal deaths have surged, prompting bipartisan lawmakers to introduce The Life of the Mother Act. Senator Bryan Hughes, initially a supporter of the restrictive laws, is now advocating for clearer rules that would allow abortions to save a mother's life. The bill aims to ensure that doctors can respond appropriately in emergencies, address misconceptions, and offer proper training. Texas has seen a significant increase in maternal death rates, raising concerns among medical professionals about the safety of pregnancy under the current law.
"Everybody agrees that the life of the mother should be protected," says Hughes, who is the lead sponsor on the new legislation called, The Life of the Mother Act.
The bill clarifies that doctors can terminate a pregnancy when the mother's life is at risk, as well as provide training for physicians on the subject.
If the bill passes, it would be a rare bipartisan victory in the Texas legislature, but whether it will make a significant difference for pregnant women and their doctors is unclear.
Texas is a dangerous place to be pregnant, with a maternal death risk 155 percent higher than that in California where abortion is more accessible.
