"Our ship burned while we were sleeping. We barely escaped,"
"Quick thinking and having quality equipment allowed the family to survive and call for help,"
A family departed from Eel Pond in Falmouth on Friday aboard a 30-foot pleasure craft and planned to anchor between Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. They woke to a vessel fire Monday night, abandoned ship, and swam to Naushon Island, where they found a barn for shelter. A relative reported the missing boat Tuesday evening, prompting Coast Guard and local emergency searches. Phone calls went to voicemail and cellphone pings proved inaccurate. The son found a marine radio washed ashore and used it to call for help Wednesday. One family member sustained serious injuries; two sustained minor injuries and all were airlifted to Cape Cod Hospital.
