The Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 700 active-duty Marines from Los Angeles after the return of stability. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated their presence was crucial in restoring order. The decision to send the Marines home was made over the weekend. California authorities, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass, claimed that the protests were largely peaceful. Bass expressed that the deployment was unnecessary and labeled the withdrawal a victory, calling for an end to federal immigration raids.
With stability returning to Los Angeles, the Secretary has directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines whose presence sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The Marines will be able to go back to their families and will be leaving Los Angeles. I'd like to say that they heard from the people of Los Angeles: This was an unnecessary deployment.
This is a victory. We need all of these raids to end.
The Pentagon last week released about half of the 4,000 California National Guard members whom Trump also deployed to Los Angeles over Newsom's objections.
