A significant number of vulnerable individuals in the U.S. will lose their federal housing assistance much earlier than anticipated, potentially leading to eviction and homelessness. Initially funded through the American Rescue Plan, the emergency housing vouchers program was designed to help those in dire situations last until 2030. However, due to early depletion of funds, housing authorities predict only another 18 months of assistance remains. This outcome is attributed to rising inflation and housing costs during the Biden administration, putting many back at risk of losing housing.
"Our assistance ran out because rent is too expensive, so now you have to figure out how to pay for your expensive rent on your own."
