A Vermont federal judge has released Tufts Ph.D. student Rümeysa Ãztürk, detained by ICE since March for co-writing a critical essay on Israel. Judge William Sessions III stated there was no substantial evidence to justify her detention besides the op-ed. Ãztürk, who has suffered health issues during detention, is now free to complete her dissertation. In contrast, Iranian student Alireza Doroudi, facing prolonged detention without specific accusations, decided to self-deport, reflecting the uncertainty and stress of his situation.
Her continued detention cannot stand. There has been no evidence that has been introduced by the government other than the Op-Ed.
After enduring significant difficulties in detention, including asthma attacks, Ãztürk is finally free to return to Somerville and complete her dissertation.
Doroudi's legal troubles stemmed from a revoked visa and vague national security allegations, which led him to choose self-deportation despite the government's withdrawal of charges.
In the face of this legal uncertainty and prolonged detention, Mr. Doroudi chose to leave voluntarily, signaling the distress caused by his circumstances.
