When will we know who won the Oakland mayor's race?
Briefly

Residents of Oakland are awaiting the results of a close mayoral race between Loren Taylor and Barbara Lee. Alameda County Registrar Tim Dupuis explained that ballot counting will follow a strict schedule, with updates every Friday until final certification by May 15. The lengthy counting process is attributed to the manual nature of tallying mail-in ballots, which involves sorting, stacking, and validating signatures. Additionally, the arrival of ballots beyond election day extends the counting timeline further, creating uncertainty in the final outcome and potentially leading candidates to declare results sooner based on the count's direction.
"That all takes a bunch of time and it's very manual," Dupuis said. "You've opened up mail at your own home; imagine doing that 42,000 times."
"It's impossible to say right now when the counting will be finished. But it's likely to go on for a few weeks as more ballots arrive."
