USA Baseball entered their World Baseball Classic pool play game against Italy with a perfect 3-0 record, but suffered a shocking 8-6 upset loss. Manager Mark DeRosa had incorrectly stated on MLB Network's Hot Stove that the team had already secured a quarterfinal berth. After the loss, DeRosa admitted he misread the tournament scenarios and calculations. The U.S. advancement now depends on Italy's final pool play game against Mexico. If Mexico wins by five or more runs, the U.S. is eliminated. If Mexico wins by four or fewer runs, or if Italy wins, the Americans advance to the quarterfinals.
