US sees widespread anti-Trump protests DW 04/20/2025
Briefly

On Saturday, demonstrators across the U.S. protested against President Trump’s hard-line stances on immigration, budget cuts, and other policies. Organized by the group 50501, these rallies aimed to address the perceived threats to democracy posed by Trump's administration. Protesters highlighted issues such as job losses among federal employees and funding cuts to education. The events included diverse voices showing solidarity for migrants, media integrity, and international conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, reinforcing a collective stance against perceived authoritarianism. Despite lower turnout compared to previous rallies, participants emphasized the urgency of defending democratic values.
"This is a very perilous time in America for liberty. I wanted the boys to learn about the origins of this country and that sometimes we have to fight for freedom," Thomas Bassford, 80, who was at the protests in Maine with his partner, daughter and two grandsons, told the Associated Press news agency.
"Our demonstrations are a decentralized rapid response to the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies," 50501 organizers stated regarding the events.
Protesters voiced support for migrants targeted by Trump's deportation policies, showing solidarity with federal employees who lost their jobs and universities threatened by funding cuts.
Demonstrators in the capital expressed concern that Trump was threatening democracy and the ideals held by the country, chanting slogans like 'Free Palestine' and showing support for Ukraine.
