Romania election: Populist leader leads in early exit polls DW 05/04/2025
Briefly

George Simion, the hard-right populist leader, is poised to secure a significant lead in Romania’s presidential election, with current polling showing him at 30-33%. His primary competitors, Crin Antonescu and Nicusor Dan, are trailing at 21-23%. The original election was annulled due to concerns of Russian influence favoring the far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, now under investigation. Simion’s platform is characterized by opposition to EU leadership and military support for Ukraine, echoing sentiments similar to the MAGA movement in the U.S.
I want to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who chose to vote (for me) with the number one position on the ballot paper. It was an act of courage, trust and solidarity. I am grateful and assure them that their trust will not be betrayed.
The original vote last year was canceled because of widespread concerns over Russian interference in favor of far-right Calin Georgescu, who has been placed under investigation and has been disbarred from running for office.
Simion, who is 38 years old, opposes military aid to neighboring Ukraine and is critical of European Union leadership. Simion says he's aligned with the US President Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' movement.
November's vote, which saw far-right, pro-Russian outsider Calin Georgescu surprisingly come out on top in the first round, was annulled by Romania's constitutional court which found irregularities in the financing and organization of the leading campaign.
