George Simion, the hard-right populist leader in Romania, is set to win the first round of the presidential election with approximately 30-33% of the votes. His main rivals, Crin Antonescu and Nicusor Dan, are tied for second place, each receiving around 21-23%. Simion, who benefits from a strong support base among Romanians abroad, opposes military aid to Ukraine and criticizes EU leadership. The election follows a previous vote annulled due to alleged irregularities and Russian interference in favor of a far-right candidate. A runoff with the second-place candidate is scheduled for May 18.
"I want to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who chose to vote (for me) with the number one position on the ballot paper. It was an act of courage, trust and solidarity. I am grateful and assure them that their trust will not be betrayed."
Simion opposes military aid to neighboring Ukraine and is critical of European Union leadership, aligning himself with the sentiment behind the US President Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' movement.
