In Poland's presidential runoff, historian Karol Nawrocki prevailed with 50.89% of the vote, representing the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party. His victory over liberal-conservative candidate Rafal Trzaskowski, who garnered 49.11%, signals a continuation of conservative policies, particularly those barring migrant influx and obstructing governmental reforms. Nawrocki's campaign, although framed as non-partisan, was heavily supported by PiS, posing a significant challenge to the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The outcome is a notable setback for Tusk’s government, potentially compromising efforts to restore the rule of law in Poland.
"We have succeeded in uniting the entire patriotic camp," said Nawrocki, who went on to say that a "Poland without migrants" was his political objective.
"We won because we were right," added PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, reflecting on the party's strategy and support during Nawrocki's campaign.
