Local election results deepen Serbia's political crisis DW 06/10/2025
Briefly

Citizens in Zajecar and Kosjeric celebrated after local elections, believing change from long-standing Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) rule was imminent. Opposition candidate Slavica Pantovic expressed optimism about newfound freedom. However, shortly after polls closed, SNS announced victory, claiming the electorate chose stability over dissent. The elections, the first since a deadly railway station tragedy, saw record voter turnout amid ongoing corruption protests. Despite preliminary results favoring SNS, opposition leaders insisted on investigating alleged vote tampering, promising not to concede easily as tensions mount in Serbian politics.
Preliminary results show that the SNS won 27 seats in Zajecar compared to the opposition's 23, and 14 seats to the opposition's 13 in Kosjeric.
President Aleksandar Vucic stated, 'We managed to win because the people chose the state. You can shout, block the streets, but when we step behind the curtain, we vote for our country not against it.'
