JD Vance posts emotional tribute to Pope Francis hours after they met: 'May God rest his soul'
Briefly

Following the death of Pope Francis at 88, JD Vance paid tribute, acknowledging the emotional impact on Christians worldwide. Vance noted their recent Easter Sunday meeting, during which he sensed the Pope’s declining health. He fondly recalled a homily Francis delivered early in the COVID pandemic. Despite their differing views, particularly on immigration, their encounter included personal gestures, such as Francis gifting chocolate Easter eggs to Vance’s children. This complex relationship highlights the pontiff's standing as a moral voice amidst political tensions.
"I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him," Vance wrote on X.
"I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I'll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful," he wrote alongside a link to the sermon.
"The act of deporting people... damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families, and places them in a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness," he wrote in the letter.
Despite their differences, Vance and Francis exchanged niceties, and the Holy Father gifted him three chocolate Easter eggs for his children.
